Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional Therapy is a science-based, holistic approach to wellness that respects the bio-individuality of each person, evaluating underlying nutritional needs and imbalances that lead to dysfunction in the body. By using evaluative tools and hands-on assessments, we address the root cause, rather than just the symptoms. We use whole food nutrition (and supplements, if needed) to address the foundations of health, correct any imbalances and assist your body's natural healing process to help you achieve optimal, long-term health. Please note: NTPs are not trained to diagnose or treat disease, illness or injury.
Nutritional Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Bio-individuality means understanding that what may work for one person may not work for another. Forget trendy diets. Forget being just another number in the system. This is truly a personalized wellness experience.
Our bodies were designed with the beautiful ability to heal themselves. My goal is to give your body the tools and fuel it needs to do just that!
What does the process look like?
I am happy to offer a free 20-minute consultation to new clients to talk through any questions, allowing you to get to know me and share a bit of your story. You will fill out a health history form beforehand and we will talk through how we can work together to reach your wellness goals. We can do this in person, over the phone, or via video chat.
The next step is to sign you up for an intro package. For our sessions going forward, we will either meet locally or in your home.
Before our first session, you will fill out a nutritional assessment questionnaire and a 3-day food journal. We will go over these together and discuss your health concerns and history in detail, along with your nutrition and lifestyle habits.
At our second session, if you are a local client, I will perform a hands-on functional evaluation to gather clinical information about any deficiencies or dysfunction in the body. This may also include testing for the proper nutrient and supplement protocol to support your needs, called Lingual Neuro Testing. Please wear comfy clothes to this appointment (think yoga pants and a t-shirt...nothing with thick seams, zippers or buttons).
At our third session (second if you are a distance client), we will go over the results of your nutritional assessment questionnaire and functional evaluation. I will also give you your individualized protocol and recommendations.
Our fourth session will be our first follow-up session to check in, see how you are doing, and make any adjustments to the protocol. This wraps up the initial package and we can continue session-to-session after this point, or you can purchase a session bundle.
Because everyone moves at a different pace, we can tailor the frequency and length of sessions to meet your needs. I want the process to feel manageable so you feel energized and committed!
During nutritional therapy, you should expect to be diligent and invested in the process for at least 6 months. This is not a quick fix. Some people start feeling better right away, but please realize it likely took years for your body to develop the issues you are experiencing. It will take patience and determination to help your body heal but I will be with you every step of the way! Just know the rewards are tremendous and your wellness is worth it!
What is an appointment like?
Our initial 20-minute free consultation is flexible and can take place anywhere, whether it's a coffee shop, on the phone, or via video chat.
From that point on, we can agree to meet either locally or in your home. You can expect appointments to last an hour, with the exception of the full functional evaluation sessions, which will last approximately 2 hours (90 min for the FE and 30 min for my setup and cleanup). I will travel up to 10 miles from downtown Portland, or up to 20 miles for an additional fee.
For more details about what to expect during the appointments, please see the question above "What does the process look like?"
How should I prepare for an in-home appointment?
For most appointments, we just need a quiet place to sit and chat. Please eliminate as many distractions as possible.
For appointments including a functional evaluation, we will need a quiet room with enough space for a massage table and room for me to walk around it. Please wear comfortable clothing without thick seams, zippers or buttons (think yoga pants and a comfortable t-shirt).
What is the NAQ (Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire)?
The NAQ is a detailed questionnaire using over 300 signs and symptoms to help me identify potential nutritional deficiencies, imbalances in the body, and which organs or body systems need the most attention from a nutritional perspective. The patterns and insight that emerge from the questionnaire are pretty remarkable and help set the direction for creating your protocol.
The NAQ must be filled out and returned 3 days before our Initial Intake Appointment. If you love filling out questionnaires or taking online quizzes, you'll love the NAQ! :) A link to the NAQ will be included in your booking confirmation email.
What is the Functional Evaluation?
The Functional Evaluation is a hands-on clinical evaluation which helps me determine weaknesses, deficiencies and imbalances throughout the body, and identify any organ systems under stress. I will do a series of palpations correlating to specific organs and systems, as well as using other clinical tools like blood pressure, pulse, etc.
In a sense, the FE allows me to communicate directly with your body so I can gain insight into your health and determine your individualized nutritional therapy plan and recommendations.
The FE is accompanied by Lingual Neuro Testing. Read more about LNT below.

What is Lingual Neuro Testing?
The human body is amazing. Did you know the nerves in the tongue act as a "barcode scanner" telling the brain what specific nutrients are contained in our foods and supplements? These nerves carry the information to the brain and then to the entire body via the nervous system, creating a feedback loop where the tongue is in regular communication with our organs and systems.
Lingual Neuro Testing is a tool using this biofeedback loop as a means to tell us whether an organ or system will respond positively or negatively to a therapeutic food or supplement. This simple and effective technique tells me what will be beneficial to your healing and will help restore balance to your body, giving the insight needed to create your personalized, bio-individual nutritional protocol.
LNT is part of the Functional Evaluation. We will palpate a point, then place a nutrient on the tongue, palpate the point again, and note the change. This is a powerful tool...pretty mind-blowing and pretty fun!
Why do I need to fill out a food journal?
Although it can seem tedious, the food journal is an absolutely critical and mandatory part of the process. It helps us identify foods, eating habits, and other important factors that could be helping or hindering your health. Food is medicine, so the food journal is essential to the healing process!
