Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional Therapy is a science-based, holistic approach to wellness that respects the bio-individuality of each person, evaluating underlying nutritional needs and imbalances that lead to dysfunction in the body. By using evaluative tools and hands-on assessments, we address the root cause, rather than just the symptoms. We use whole food nutrition (and supplements, if needed) to address the foundations of health, correct any imbalances and assist your body's natural healing process to help you achieve optimal, long-term health. Please note: NTPs are not trained to diagnose or treat disease, illness or injury.
Nutritional Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Bio-individuality means what may work for one person may not work for another. Forget trendy diets. Forget being just another number in the system. This is truly a personalized wellness experience.
Our bodies were designed with the beautiful ability to heal themselves. My goal is to give your body the tools and fuel it needs to do just that!
What does the process look like?
I am happy to offer a free 30-minute consultation to new clients to talk through any questions, allowing you to get to know me and share a bit of your story. You will fill out a health history form beforehand and we will talk through how we can work together to reach your wellness goals. We can do this in person, over the phone, or via video chat.
From there you can either purchase a package or pay for sessions a la carte. In either case, you will begin with an Initial Intake Appointment.
Before our intake session, you will fill out a nutritional assessment questionnaire and a 3-day food and mood journal. We will go over these together and discuss your health concerns and history in detail, along with your nutrition and lifestyle habits.
If you are a local client, it is likely that our second session will include a hands-on functional clinical assessment to gather information about any organs and systems in the body that may be struggling. This may also include testing for the proper nutrient and supplement protocol to support your needs, called lingual neuro testing. Please wear comfy clothes to this appointment (think yoga pants and a t-shirt...nothing with thick seams, zippers or buttons).
From there, I will develop your individualized protocol and recommendations. We will check back in regularly to assess your progress and make any necessary protocol updates or adjustments.
Because everyone moves at a different pace, we can tailor the frequency and length of sessions to meet your needs. I want the process to feel manageable so you feel energized and committed!
During nutritional therapy, you should expect to be diligent and invested in the process for at least 6 months. This is not a quick fix. Some people start feeling better right away, but please realize it likely took years for your body to develop the issues you are experiencing. It will take patience and determination to help your body heal. I will be with you every step of the way! Just know the rewards are tremendous and your wellness is worth it!
What is an appointment like?
Our initial 30-minute free consultation can take place at a tea shop, on the phone, or via video chat.
From that point on, we will meet for our appointments at Oasis of Change - 2037 N Williams Ave, Portland, OR 97227. Under some circumstances, it is also possible for me to come to your home.
You can expect appointments to last an hour, with the exception of the initial functional clinical assessment session, which will last approximately 90 min.
For more details about what to expect during the appointments, please see the question above "What does the process look like?"
How should I prepare for an in-home session?
Under certain circumstances, I can conduct our appointments in your home. We will need a quiet place to sit and chat. Please eliminate as many distractions as possible.
For appointments including a functional clinical assessment, we will need a quiet room with enough space for a massage table and room for me to walk around it. Please wear comfortable clothing without thick seams, zippers or buttons (think yoga pants and a comfortable t-shirt).
For other services (ie pantry makeovers), we can discuss further details before your session.
What is the NAQ (Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire)?
The NAQ is a detailed questionnaire using over 300 signs and symptoms to identify potential nutritional deficiencies, imbalances in the body, and which organs or systems need the most attention from a nutritional perspective. The patterns and insight that emerge from the questionnaire are pretty remarkable and help set the direction for creating your protocol.
The NAQ must be filled out and returned 3 days before our Initial Intake Appointment. If you love filling out questionnaires or taking online quizzes, you'll love the NAQ! :) A link to the NAQ will be included in your booking confirmation email.
What is the Functional Clinical Assessment?
The Functional Clinical Assessment is a hands-on evaluation that uncovers weaknesses, deficiencies and imbalances throughout the body, and identifies any organs or systems under stress. I will palpate different points on your body, as well as use other clinical tools like blood pressure, pulse, etc.
In a sense, the FCA allows me to communicate directly with your body to gain insight into your health and determine your individualized nutritional therapy plan and recommendations.
The FCA is accompanied by Lingual Neuro Testing. Read more about LNT below.
For FCA sessions, please wear comfortable clothing without thick seams, zippers or buttons (think yoga pants and a comfortable t-shirt).
What is Lingual Neuro Testing?
The human body is amazing. Did you know the nerves in the tongue act as a "barcode scanner" telling the brain what specific nutrients are contained in our foods and supplements? These nerves carry the information to the brain and then to the entire body via the nervous system, creating a feedback loop where the tongue is in regular communication with our organs and systems.
Lingual Neuro Testing is a tool using this biofeedback loop as a means to tell us whether an organ or system will respond positively or negatively to a therapeutic food or supplement. This simple and effective technique tells me what will be beneficial to your healing and will help restore balance to your body, giving the insight needed to create your personalized, bio-individual nutritional protocol.
LNT is part of the Functional Clinical Assessment. We will palpate a point, then place a nutrient on the tongue, palpate the point again, and note the change. This is a powerful tool. It’s so fascinating to communicate directly with the body!
Why do I need to fill out a food and mood journal?
Although it can seem tedious, the food journal is an absolutely critical part of the process. It helps us identify foods, eating habits, and other important factors that could be helping or hindering your health. It can also reveal connections between your meals and your symptoms. Food is medicine, so the food journal is essential to the healing process!
What is the cancellation policy?
Packages and individual sessions are non-refundable.
If you need to cancel/postpone an appointment, please do so at least 24 hours before your session. I will help you reschedule your appointment at that time.
Cancelling within 24 hours will result in loss of the session and funds. You will need to book a new appointment.
